"The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us  what is true and to make us realize what is wrong with our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right.  It is God's way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone."
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Daily Bible reading isn't some rote, religious thing to do; it's a way for us to better understand the heart and character of God... it's a means for us to grow spiritually.  Below are some links to some different Bible reading plans; find one that interests you and start today!

SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR READING:

  • Make reading daily a habit

  • Read with purpose... with intent... with an expectation to connect with God.

  • Don't read for distance (i.e. see how much you can read); read for understanding.  Take notes.

  • Put what you read into practice.

  • Pray before... after... and as you read... "God, what do you want to show me today?"

  • Find a partner to provide accountability and encouragement as you read.

Plan for Reading the Bible - Three Tracks/Options

Of all the reasons people give for not reading the Bible, simple discouragement ranks the highest.  The Bible's length alone - about 1,000 pages - is pretty daunting!  The Bible is more like a self-contained library than a book: it includes 66 different books/letters written by several dozen authors.  No small wonder that people often get confused and discouraged.

The following three-track reading plan may help to break the Bible into more manageable portions.  If you're new to the Bible, begin with Track 1, then proceed to Track 2, and finally - if you dare - tackle Track 3.  Your understanding and appreciation for the Bible should increase as you read and you become more familiar with the character of God revealed in Scripture.

All three tracks share one thing in common: they usually assign no more than one chapter a day - which means the average reader should be able to complete the daily assignment in no more than 5-10 minutes.

TRACK 1:  Introduction to the Bible

Track 1 is a great place to begin reading the Bible.  Three two-week reading courses take you quickly through passages of the Bible that every Christian ought to be familiar with.  These passages were selected with two things in mind:

  1. They are frequently quoted or referred to

  2. They are relatively easy to read and understand

Track 1 is a sampler designed to whet your appetite for more.

TRACK 2:  Every Book in the Bible

Track 2 includes 186 of the 1,189 chapters of the entire Bible.  Many well-known parts/stories of the Bible are omitted from this plan, and you'll only read one chapter from some books (Leviticus, for example).

These 186 chapters have been selected because they are understandable to the average reader without commentary.  Taken together, they provide a good foundation of Bible understanding.  If you miss a few days, no big deal; just resume reading when you can... about a chapter a day.  In about 180 days, you'll get an overview of the Bible that includes something from every book in the Bible.

If you're doing Track 2, we recommend that if your Bible has an introduction to each book, that you read that as well; you may find it helpful to gain some insight about the book you're reading.

TRACK 3:  Read Through the Bible in a Year

Track 3 is reading through the entire Bible in just one year... in as little as 15 minutes a day.  This plan includes daily readings from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs.

You can use the plan included in the link below with your own Bible or you can purchase a One Year Bible which includes it's own reading plan:
